Why Your Social Media Strategy Isn’t Working

Social media is constantly evolving. Due to algorithm updates or simply customer behavior changes, strategies that may have performed well before, might not work today.

Here’s 5 common mistakes we see when brands social engagement starts slipping and solutions to get you back on top.

1. Not engaging with followers

Social media is a two way street. Brands with low engagement might not be liking or commenting on their followers posts. In order to get, you need to give. By engaging with your followers or content from users who are in your target audience, you encourage them to do the same with your content and you begin to build brand loyalty. We’ve found this also helps Instagram to prioritize your account in the algorithm.

2. Posting only sales driven content

Who wants to login to social media and scroll through ads? Not many people.

Take some time to assess and research the types of content your target demographic responds to. It could be memes, Reels, behind the scene videos, etc. And then, create those types of posts. It will take some trial and error, but once you figure out what your audience wants to see, you’ll start getting more engagement quickly.

3. Having an uncohesive Instagram feed

Instagram is a visual platform and the aesthetic of your page determines the first impression potential customers will have about your brand. When you use a planning app like Later, Planoly or our personal favorite, Metricool, you can visualize your posts prior to publishing. This helps keep your content visually appealing and on brand. Using similar color schemes, filters, and fonts will help to create an appealing content story.

4. Only using static images

Instagram now considers itself a video sharing platform and Reels are a must. Try to create at least one Reel a month to start with. See what audios are trending and incorporate those songs. Here’s a Reel we created for our client StarCycle where we used an on-brand filter and a popular song. It quickly received over 12k plays and 460 likes.

5. Not posting consistently

Lastly and perhaps most importantly, hold yourself accountable to posting on a regular schedule. That may just be a couple of posts a week or it could mean daily. Find a doable posting schedule and stick to it. We use a scheduling planner and it makes it easy to batch content all at once and automatically posts it.
